Imagination describes the ability to create mental images and to recall them in the mind’s eye. This ability is not equally strong in everyone and can, in some cases, even be completely absent. Aphantasia refers to this phenomenon: a limited or even absent visual imagination. Visions remain abstract, and the translation from word to concrete image does not occur.
In her bachelor’s exhibition “Ohne Bild”, Rhoda Herold presents code-based deconstructed type as well as the resulting digital design tool “Bild ohne Bild”, which translates text into abstract images.
The exhibition also features an endless dot matrix print installation that gradually deconstructs a text about the artist’s personal background over a period of five days in order to make aphantasia visible.
