Ambiguous Aesthetics

Master Thesis Lena Weber

One programmed tool – Two type systems

»Ambiguous Aesthetics« extends the classification of systematic design processes from the bachelor thesis into three structure-giving aesthetics (»Aesthetics of Repetition«, »Aesthetics of Balance«, »Aesthetics of Development«) by another concept, which deals with a special »Aesthetics of Programmed Images«.It is my attempt to grasp, define and substantiate the special aesthetics that surround programmed design and what ambiguity has to do with it. Programmed design is always based on data in some form – this data shows up ambiguously as a visual aspect: An »Ambiguous Aesthetic«. The »Ambiguous Aesthetic« occurs between two aspects of a programmed visual: viewing it as a means of communication and viewing it as a data visualisation.Encryption, legibility and systematic disguising of data and information are essential themes of the graphical results.

Typeface: WIM MONO R12

»Wim Mono« is a grid based and modular typeface. Its non-axially-symmetric design enables the glyphs to fit together like puzzle pieces horizontally as well as vertically. »Wim Mono« includes connector-components for every Letter-to-Letter combination. This lets you write in full-word-ligatures where all letters are connected to one another via the grid. »Wim Mono« is a toolkit inviting designers to follow or break its rules, perfect for eye-catching headlines, monograms, petters and even graphic design elements. Used right, the limitations of the grid combined with the included features for modularity, variation and combination unleash the POWER OF THE GRID!

Typeface: GRADIAL Variable

»Gradial« is a modular gradient typeface. Not readable through shape but through the transition between light and dark. Through different gradient colours and gradient stops »Gradial« achieves a surprising diversity in effects ranging from metallic, textured to 3D. »Gradial« also comes as a variable font. Making gradients variable within font-files is a relatively new feature. »Gradial« sports variable outlines as well as variable gradients. It supports variability from Thin to Extender and two encryption styles that dissolve the readability of the letters via the grid.
