Since its inception in 2013, the Weimar-based research lab Space for Visual Research has gradually enlarged its operations to inspire a lively exchange with students and like-minded practitioners. A fundamental part of this endeavor is an ongoing series of exhibitions, lectures, and workshops, which have been hosted by universities and cultural institutions across the globe.
In September 2019, SfVR founder Markus Weisbeck and his team were invited to the Chinese city of Macau to contribute to the “Design Summer”, a 4-day summer workshop series organized by the creative industry association Chiu Yeng Culture (CYC) in partnership with the acclaimed graphic designer Jianping He. Conceived as a platform for creative exchange between practitioners, workshop instructors, and new design talent, the event provided the opportunity to share professional insights and build new relationships. It also aspired to reshape Macau’s cultural landscape, bringing in global perspectives, visions, and skills.
Other workshops included “Illustration Design”, headed by Professor Henning Wagenbreth (Universität der Künste, Berlin), “Design Coordination”, led by the award-winning Japanese designer Katsumi Asaba, and “The Emotion of Letters”, by typography luminary and “Design Summer” founder Jianping He.
