The conventions that shape how we read and emphasise have grown over time. We may not reinvent the wheel, but that doesn’t mean we can’t question these systems. Or stretch them. Or add something new to the mix.
It was precisely this curiosity that led to the development of the variable and double-slanted typeface ‹Atlantic› and, eventually, to the research. Exploring typographic emphasis as an active contributor to meaning rather than a purely visual device, the project investigates how even subtle shifts in form can influence the way we interpret language.
